Methodology

Every figure on this site can be traced to the filing that carried it. This page describes the sources, the extraction and derivation rules, how calculations are versioned, the rules that keep the numbers honest, and what is deliberately not covered.

From filing to figure

01

Sources

Company financials come from SEC EDGAR: the XBRL company-facts feed for consolidated statements, the daily form index for filing activity, the primary documents for filing-text comparisons, and the DERA Financial Statement and Notes data sets for dimensional facts (segment, product and geographic revenue). Macro series come from FRED and the BLS. There is no third-party fundamentals vendor in the chain.
02

Extraction

For each concept a fixed chain of us-gaap tags is tried in priority order (for example RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax before Revenues); the winning tag and unit ride on every value. Annual values are 10-K facts with a 350 to 380 day duration; quarterly values are 10-Q facts with an 80 to 100 day duration. Facts restated in a later filing are taken from the latest filing for that period end, and the accession of that filing is kept.
03

Derivation

Derived figures (free cash flow, margins, returns, leverage, the risk screens) are computed once, in one place, from same-period inputs, and served with their formula and every input leg. Free cash flow is operating cash flow minus the absolute value of capital expenditure; a missing input yields a missing output, never a zero. Definitions are published per metric on the metric definitions pages.
04

Versioning

Each calculation layer carries a version string (the extractor, the filing-text reader, the trackers, the digest). A version change re-derives the affected rows and is recorded in the repository history; the served payload names the version it was computed under so a consumer can tell old from new.
05

Citation

Every value on the financials pages opens to its provenance: form, fiscal period, period end, filing date, accession, XBRL tag and unit, or the derivation formula with its input legs. Segment figures link to the EDGAR folder of the filing that carried them.

Rules every surface obeys

  • Missing is not zero

An absent fact is shown as absent, with a reason where one is known. It is never filled, interpolated or treated as evidence.

  • Same period only

Ratios pair inputs from the same filing period. Nothing is built from the latest value of one series and an older value of another.

  • Reconcile or disclose

Bridges and breakdowns must sum to the consolidated figure or state the residual. An overlapping breakdown gets no shares.

  • Label the basis

A trailing-twelve-month figure that falls back to the latest fiscal year says so; annual and quarterly are never mixed unlabeled.

  • No correlation drivers

A driver is served only where the filer tagged it. Nothing is inferred from co-movement.

  • Deterministic text comparison

Filing-to-filing changes are computed from the documents and linked to both versions; no model-written assertion is primary evidence.

  • Descriptive, not advice

Every screen, rank and flag describes the filing. None is a rating, a signal or personalized investment advice.

  • Explained absences

Companies outside coverage carry a reason code (fund, trust, secondary share class, no XBRL on file) rather than silently missing.

Coverage is US-listed operating companies on Nasdaq and the NYSE that file XBRL financials with the SEC. Foreign private issuers on Form 20-F and 40-F, funds, trusts and structured products are outside the crawl and say so when looked up. The security master was last refreshed 2026-09-06.

Securities routed out of the crawl, by reason: OTC listings 2,648 · secondary share classes 2,039 · warrants, units, rights, preferred 488 · funds and investment products 484 · no exchange listed 231 · royalty and commodity trusts 19 · pending classification 19 · trust certificates 11.

Update cadence

  • Nightly (Tue to Sat, UTC): the security master is refreshed and every company that filed a 10-K or 10-Q that day is re-extracted.
  • Nightly: filing-text comparisons and 8-K item triage for watchlist companies.
  • Weekly (Saturday): the filing digest for the week just ended.
  • Weekly (Sunday): new DERA monthly data sets are ingested as the SEC publishes them (a month's file appears a few weeks into the next month).
  • Continuous: every pipeline reports a heartbeat; a stale or failed job is visible on the engine's health endpoint and alerts the operator.

What is deliberately not here

  • Market prices, returns and price-derived multiples are paused site-wide; nothing on a company page depends on a quote.
  • Analyst consensus estimates are licensed data with no public substitute and are not shown.
  • Guidance, targets and forecasts: the site describes what was filed, not what might happen.
